Brodie's Close / Celtic Lodge 1846 Ceiling Repairs.
Heritage Conservator Rob Thomson gave A Report on the building.
The Report outlined 3 distinct phases and that he could only complete phase 1 at this stage.
Search by lifting the floorboards to inspect and report on the costs of phase 2.
Fortunately by lifting the floorboards when we did phase 2 was completed without additional costs.
The Work Comprises of fixing weak areas of the Ceiling and filling cracks that have appeared.
When the Ceiling was lifted it was noticed that the top of the ceiling was covered in a layer of deafening up to 200mm deep in places. (Deafening is an acoustic insulation in the form of a mixture of clay or lime sand and Black Smithy Ash normally deafening is supported between floor joists by deafening boards.
To prevent weight being held on the top of the ceiling. In this case the defening was directly on the lath and plaster ceiling.
The deafening was removed in the area in six bays in front of the Fireplace.
In all about 200kg of deafening was removed. This alone will have improved the stability and taken the weight off the original fixings.
During the renovations an old shoe was found between the floor boards then some bones were found it sent us in to a state of panic at first we thought we had a dead body or may be it was the Deacon himself we were about to phone the Police and forensic but after looking around it was found that the bones were small chicken and others mixed in for the deafening.
The shoe was an old tradition of putting a shoe between the floor boards to bring the house or building luck so we removed the old shoe and put in a newer one.
We still have the old shoe and it will make our stories around the Harmony table part of the History of the Celtic Lodge.
There were problems in the diagnosis of the Ceiling but hopefully the problems with the ceiling have been dealt with now.
The area that required most fixing work was above the Great Fireplace in the Thistle Room below.
The joists in this area have been cut to allow for the Fireplace.
This might mean that the joists are weaker here and so have allowed the ceiling to flex a little. It might be that this area was used more heavily as it is by the door.
Paint Analysis. Michael Pearce of Historic Scotland took Paint Samples and looked at the cross section of these samples under a microscope.
Michael found 10 layers of Paint mostly Oil Paint and mostly White and Cream Paints.
The Earliest was from the first part of the 19th Century (1800-1850) there was some evidence for earlier White and Cream Paints but he thinks most of these were scrubbed off to ensure the Oil Paint would stick to the plaster.
One interesting point is the original plaster was coloured yellow and possibly red suggesting (not proving) that this might have been the original colour.
The ceiling has been inspected and all loose areas secured and all major cracks repaired. We can now start to think about making it look a little more presentable.
The work was completed between 21st to 26th February 2010 by Rob Thomson and Douglas Carpenter.
Bro W JR Boland and Bro Ian Murray thanked Mr Rob Thomson for the detailed report, which is now in the Celtic Lodge Files.
