DOB 3rd April 1961, A Master Mason of the Celtic Lodge Edinburgh and Leith No 291

 

Brother Gavin was initiated into the Celtic Lodge at the age of 23 years on the 5th March 1985 Edinburgh

Bro Gavin Enlisted as a Junior Piper in 1977 and he had a long Distinguished Career with the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and the Band were made famous for the Original Bagpipe recording of Amazing Grace and Highland Cathedral

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards were deployed on Tours of Northern Ireland

 

In 1988 Gavin began a Career over a 15 Year term in Command of His Majesty the Sultan of Oman’s Royal Guards 2nd Band Squadron of the Royal Mounted Pipes and Drums, as Pipe Major Teaching and Administrator of the Pipes and Drums

 

1993 Gavin’s next assignment was in Command of His Majesty the Sultan, and was responsible for forming the Royal Mounted Guard Pipe Band 3rd Band Squadron, and from the young Men some who never Read or had written English also they had very little knowledge of Music or the Bagpipes, and had no experience of Riding on a Horse. The Mounted Pipe Band Paraded and Played before:-

 

His Majesty the Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and the Nation, the Full Band of 38Pipes and Drums, including 2 Drum Horses

The Band was established within a Year and Won the Oman’s Royal Guard Band Competition in 1997 against many more experienced Bands.

 

Pipe Major Gavin Moffat’s, knowledge and understanding of Living and working in a Muslim Country has given him the experience and respect in the World of Islam.

Bro Gavin also has the respect of not only His Majesty the Sultan and the Princes but the people of Oman, many regard him as a Father Figure and Mentor, his warm nature and infectious sense of humour, together with his Musicianship and Arabic linguistic ability have proven to be of a great Asset in getting the best effort and work rate from his Students, as can be seen from the many Photos, Gavin prizes in his collection.

Bro Gavin known to his Friends as (Gogs) has had an exciting lifestyle like the Scottish Lawrence of Arabia and is a credit to the Celtic Lodge 291.
