19th January 2010. Normal Regular Meeting.

1st February 2010.

General Committee Meeting held in the Celtic Lodge.

RWM Bro James E Fraser presiding.

alt  Bro Bill Boland PM gave an additional report.

Bro Bill met with Mr Brian Findlay, as he expressed a meeting for the Celtic Lodge to Grant a 12 year Lease to continue his present Lease at the end of 2012 making a total of 15 years.

After some discussion Bro Bill reported back to the Committee.

Who had agreed that Bro Bill Boland PM could negotiate for the Lodge?

It was agreed that Mr B Findlay could have the continued 12 years Lease as follows:-

1 The Celtic Lodge Trustees to grant Mr B Findlay a 12 year lease to continue at the end of his present Lease as of the 31st December 2012.

2 The Celtic Lodge would receive a premium as agreed payable over the next 5 years, starting on or around the 1st August 2010.

3 Mr Findlay would be responsible for the general up keep and utility Bills of the proposed Lease as he has in the past.

4 If the Committee were to agree to this proposal it would not affect the normal three yearly rental reviews and the Committee to hold the same rights.

5 If Mr and Mrs Findlay were to sell the lease other than pass it to their family they would be obliged to negotiate with the Lodge on a settlement.

6 The only outstanding item would be, Mr Findlay asked if the Lodge would help if a Fire Alarm System would be required.

The Committee did grant the Lease as it would help to secure the financial position of the Celtic Lodge over the next term.

Mr Findlay would also be interested in supplying meals for our meetings, but if we do not require meals, we would still have access to the Kitchen.

Brother William's Masonic Diploma

A Masonic Diploma from the Celtic Lodge was found on the Battle Field of Cawnpore in 1857 the Diploma was found by Captain Robert Thompson on the 6th December 1857, after the engagement with the 53rd Regiment the Gwalior Contingent The Celtic Lodge Masonic Diploma was Issued to Brother William Hyde Colour Sergeant 82nd Regiment Brother William was Proposed by Bro Davies and seconded by Bro Thomas Maxwell William was Initiated Passed and Raised on the 26th December 1854,on the Morning of the 6th December 1857 the main attack and after the non-combatants were safely away from Cawnpore the Regiments as follows:- Feint from entrenchment and artillery fire in order to convince the rebels into believing that the main British attack would come from the north or the British Right. Brigadier Greathed to attack the rebel Centre based in General Ganj area. The main attack on the sepoy right by Brigadier Inglis’s and Brigadier Adrian Hope’s Brigades Cavalry Brigade to threaten the rebel communication with Kalpi.

6th Infantry Brigade Parts of Rifle Brigade

Detachment of HM 38 Foot In all the British had about 5,000 infantry, six hundred cavalry and thirty five guns, The Enfield Rifles which automatically reduced the rebel potential to one fourth and multiplied the British hitting power by four times. It may be noted that the main British attack was going south of the built up area where the advantage of close quarter battle and thereby reduced engagement ranges which benefited the sepoy was nullified. In addition the tremendous British artillery superiority must not be under estimated. The British victory was a foregone conclusion and Tantia’s defeat as inevitable as that of Russians in the Crimean War.The British casualties were nominal, i.e. just 98 killed or wounded the Pursuit continued until 08 December 1857. Tantia escaped towards Kalpi while his centre and left escaped towards Bithur. From here some of them withdrew towards Farrukhabad whereas some crossed the Ganges and withdrew into Oudh. Brother William Hyde fell in this conflict his Masonic Diploma was found in the field by Colonel Robert Thompson of the 53rd Regiment and we thank Brother Thompson for his diligence under what would have been a very difficult and dangerous time. When Captain Thompson returned to Britain he sent Brother William’s Diploma to the Celtic Lodge 15th December 1866.We at the Celtic Lodge still have Brother William’s Diploma framed and although slightly faded by time, its Masonic lustre shines bright in our hearts and we at the Celtic Lodge had many Brethren from other Regiments who fought in these campaigns now passed to that Mystic Battlefield above and if we were at harmony in our Lodge we would drink a bumper toast to absent Brethren. Some items above were taken from Chapter Twelve Battle of Cawnpore December 1857. If anyone would like to add or enlighten us with other information on any other Brother from this time or time in our history we at the Celtic Lodge would be very grateful.

Extract from the Swedish Order of Freemasons by Bro Bill Boland PM. Freemasonry was brought to Sweden by Count axel Wrede-Sparre, a Cavalry Officer who during service in France had become a Freemason. After returning to Sweden he brought together some friends who like himself had been made Freemasons abroad.

In 1735, he was initiated and passed his brother-in-law Count Carl Gustaf Tessin in Stockholm. Most Brethren joining Wrede-Sparre's Lodge belonged to the Nobility.

The meetings seemed to have ceased at the end of the 1740s.

At the beginning of the 1750s many of the Brethren who had been initiated by Wrede-Sparre or abroad.

Count Knut Posse established Lodge St Jean Auxiliaire (John the Baptist) in 1752. Bro Wrede-Sparre and most of his Brethren joined Lodge St Jean Auxiliair.

Bro Wrede-Sparre handed over the rituals and other documentsto the new Lodge.

The Lodge St Jean was called Mother Lodge of Sweden.

The RWM Bro John Sinclair Thanked All the Brethren for attending his Installation and the Celtic Brethren for intrusting him with such a high honour.

The Lodge was Closed in Due and Solemn form by RWM John Hunter Sinclair.

William (The Deacon)Brodie is to-day one of Scotland's loveable Crooks, along with Burke and Hare. and Many Visitors to Edinburgh seek out the many Tours.

We at the Celtic Lodge Now own the Premises, at our Harmonies many Stories and Tails have been Told.

The Mural has captured the History of the Close from its early days up to the present Day. You can also visit our Web Page were you can find a History of The Celtic Lodge and a History of Connections with Brodie's Close.

The first part of the Mural is on the History of the close its self, the area now known as 304 the Lawnmarket and Brodie's Close.

The Cambuskenneth Monks had various properties in and around Edinburgh.

One in particular in in the Lawnmarket, The Cambuskenneth Monks had a had premises on the right hand side of the in the Close, and they had a Bake house and Oven in the back aera, they would Bake the Bread and Rolls of the Day.

The Monks are part of Cambuskenneth Abbey, which was built by order of King David I, around the year 1140 dedicated to the Virgin Mary first known as the Abbey of St Mary of Stirling Royalty including English King Edward I, 17th June 1239-7thJuly 1307 known as Longshanks King of England 1272-1307-King Robert the Bruce I of Scotland 11th July 1274-7th June 1329 4 Greats Grand Son of King David I King Robert I, sometimes referred to as the Hero King his body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey both English and Scottish Kings prayed regularly at the Abbey-In 1486 Margaret of Denmark died at nearby Stirling Castle was buried in the Abbey.

The Abbot of Cambuskenneth later Commander of Cambuskenneth was the head of the Augustinian Monastic community-The Abbey had properties all over Scotland donated by wealthy Patrons for a promise of being taken care of in the afterlife some properties in the Lawnmarket Edinburgh were sold to Elizabeth Scott Lady Manderston.

Elizabeth Scott Lady Manderston, 310 Lawnmarket Tenement printer Houses-Attic-Cellars the lands formerly belonging to the Abbey and Covent of Cambuskenneth, some research has been done on Elizabeth Scott, and one theory  is that she may be related to Sir Walter Scott or the Scott family.

The middle section is part of the History of the Celtic Lodge and some of the Regiments and Members at that Time. We are proud of all the Regiments and Brave Soldiers associated with our Lodge, we had 50 Regiments and 317 Member from all Ranks.

The Lodge records show that from at least January 1832 to March 1876 the lodge initiated 157 cavalrymen from 13 regiments. Between April 1823 and March 1857 the lodge initiated 64 infantrymen drawn from 18 regiments of the line plus a Royal Navy surgeon. The initiates came from every rank from trooper or private through to colonel James Charles Chatterton 4th Irish Dragoon Guards initiated 29th November 1845 and colonel James McDonald 2nd Life Guards initiated 4th August 1848.

Indeed the Celtic Lodge had Brethren in the Crimean War who took part in the Charge of the Heavy and Light Brigades in 1854 the taking of the Redan in the Battle of Sevastopol in 1855.

The Heavy Brigade, commanded by General Scarlett, was made up of five cavalry regiments four of which contained members of Celtic lodge totalling forty four brethren.

The Light Brigade, commanded by Lord Cardigan, was also made up of five cavalry regiments. Two of those regiments contained members of the lodge namely the 13th Light Dragoon Guards which had six brethren and the 17th Lancers which had twenty brethren.

One of whom was Brother Henry Joy of the 17th Lancers. At the time of the charge he was recorded as being the Trumpet Major, Regimental Number 416. Being the Senior Regimental Trumpeter he was assigned for one week to serve as Duty Trumpeter to Lord Lucan.

It was during that week that the Battle of Balaclava took place. It is claimed, but not without dispute, that Henry Joy sounded the charge of the Light Brigade.

17th Lancers fielded no less than three John Browns on that famous day;

                                   John Brown Private No.455

                                   John Brown Trumpeter No.476

                                   John Brown Trumpeter No.926

The charge of the Heavy Brigade was a resounding success resulting in 900 British cavalry throwing back the advance of some 3000 Russian cavalry.

It is well known however that the Charge of the Light Brigade was a glorious military blunder brought about by poor communications and personality clashes which resulted in 247 men being killed or wounded out of a compliment of about 673.

The horses suffered even worse with 475 being killed.

Both the 13th Light Dragoon Guards and the 17th Lancers reached the Russian guns killing those gunners who had not fled and then returned back the way that they had come through the infamous Valley of Death.

Battle of Cawnpore 6th December 1857

This battle was an important element in the quelling of the Indian Mutiny and once again, among other regiments, were the 33rd 34th and 82nd regiments of foot.

The Battle of Cawnpore can be regarded as complete in respect of Brother William Hyde, Colour Sergeant 82nd Regiment of Foot.

At three different meetings held in December 1854 six members of the 82nd regiment of foot were Initiated in Celtic Lodge. They comprised Two Privates, a Sergeant, Two Colour Sergeants and the Band Master one Pablo Castaldini who went on to become the first Band Master of the Royal Scots.

On the 6th December 1857 the 82nd Regiment together with several other Regiments of the line fought an engagement with the Rebel 53rd Regiment of the Gwalior Contingent which resulted in the destruction of the 53rd Regiment.

However Brother William Hyde did not survive the battle. His Celtic Lodge Diploma was recovered from the field by a Captain Robert Thompson, Paymaster of the 53rd Regiment of the line. He wrote on the back of the Diploma describing where and when he had found it and also mentioning the Gwalior Contingent.

Captain Thompson gave the Diploma to Brother F. Westlake Deputy Grand Master, London District, Canada West, British North America. Nine years after the battle in a letter dated 27th December 1866 Brother Westlake wrote to the Lodge stating that he held the Diploma and would return it to the Lodge if they so wished.

In due course the diploma was returned to the lodge, and is on display in the lodge to this day.

Most of the above events are reflected in the Mural in particular the charge of the Light Brigade and the death of Brother William Hyde.

The Third part of the Mural, is of the Famous or Infamous William the Deacon Brodie

William Brodie City Councillor, by Day and robber at Night, among his many talents was the repair of locks and security mechanical devices, he made copies of his clients keys using wax or putty impressions which included many of his Rich clients.

William kept a black smith’s shop in the Lawnmarket, were George Smith a English black Smith would forge exact copies of the keys. Then William would return in the midst of night to steal their most sacred possessions. He then used his ill gotten gains to maintain his new life style including two mistresses and five children and the Gambling habit, now out of control William recruited three additional members to help in the wave of his crime.

Included Mr Brown-Mr George Smith an English Lock Smith and Mr Ainslie among their many exploits was that of an armed raid on the Excise office Chassell's Court Canongate. The plan failed when Ainslie was Captured he turned King’s evidence to avoid transportation, Ainslie also informed on the gang.

William escaped to the Netherlands with the intent to board ship to the America United States of America, but was arrested in Amsterdam and escorted back to Edinburgh by ship.

William Brodie and George Smith’s trial started on 27th August 1788 and with no real evidence against William, until the tools of his trade were found in his house. ie:-

Copied keys disguises and fire arms, no money or Jewellery items were found even the Silver Mace stolen from the University of Edinburgh.

Mr Henry Erskine Brodie’s counsel spoke highly of William and said he was well known in the community where he grew up as a Child, and was respected and incapable or be guilty of such Skulduggery.

William was still found guilty and sentenced to death along with his accomplice George Smith, At the trial William was Dressed in a very fine Suit with Tails White Silk Cravat and Black Tri-pointed Hat. The same way he carried out his day to day business as a well to do gentleman of the time.

William Brodie and George Smith were hanged at the Tollbooth on 1st October 1788 using the very Gallows supposed to be designed by William himself.

But according to a story.

William’s closest friend a Doctor Pierre Degraver a French quack who took to restore, William to Life after he was Hung, made a steel collar to put around his neck.

It is said that the Hangman was bribed and his Doctor friend who was on hand to pronounce William Dead.

There is an extended story that William’s Close Friend, Dr Pierre Degraver brought William’s body back to his resident in the Lawnmarket.

He Laid William body on the kitchen floor and revived him then he escaped to France, and on the next available ship sailed to America. Where his family joined him latter.

The official storey was that William’s body is buried in an unmarked grave at the Parish Church in Buccleuch and it would not be untrue to say William Brodie has stirred many a story in the annals of Edinburgh's History.

We at the Celtic Lodge of Edinburgh and Leith No 291 have the very premises that were once owned by the Brodie Family and we have a few stories of our very own.

That in our main hall once called the Roman Eagle Hall now the Thistle Room have a very large mirror on the right hand side entrance.

One night a Past Master on locking up our possessions in a safe and secure manor noticed a shadow a mist, a figure in the mirror of William Brodie the Deacon with his Tri Pointed Hat and Tails Dressed in his finest.

Our Lady cleaner will not go into our Thistle room or our Temple on her own.

In true Scottish tradition we meet to tell the Truth and to reminisce in our Celtic Folklore on our Harmony evenings, and Close our Mystic evenings with Stories of William Deacon Brodie-Robert Burns-Sir Walter Scott, Robert The Bruce-William Wallace and our very own Lodge History since 7th May 1821 see our History Section.

Brother Alexander Deuchar affiliated Member of the Lodge Celtic 28th December 1835.

Brother Alexander Deuchar was the Seal Engraver and Lyon Herald at the Court of the Lord Lyon for Heraldry in Scotland.

DOB 1777- August 1844.

Address.

Other Offices held Member of St Mary’s Chapel No 1.

Brother Morris Leon RWM of the Lodge Celtic 1835.

alt Brother Alexander Deuchar Revived the Templar tradition in Scotland in the early 19th Century. The Deuchar family had been Jacobite’s but transferred their allegiance to the Hanoverian cause before 1745, when a prominent Jacobite, Lyon of Easter Ogil carried off the great sword of Deuchar the Sword was recovered after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and in the possession of Alexander when he started his revival of the Scottish Knights Templar. The New Order started formally in 1805 when a Charter was issued to by the Grand Encampment of Ireland previously the High Templar’s of Ireland Lodge, under the title of the Edinburgh Encampment No 31.

It became the Grand Assembly of the Knights Templar in Edinburgh. His Brother, David was in the 1st Regiment of Foot, The Royal Scots.

Since the mid nineteenth century myths, legends and anecdotes connecting the Templars to the Battle of Bannockburn have created. Degrees in Freemasonry, such as the Royal Order of Scotland. Allude to the ancient story of Rosslyn and the Scottish Knights Templar.

The Eight Pointed Cross of The Scottish Knights Templar. The Cross Pattee of the Scottish Knights Templar of the Commandery of St Clair, Grand Priory of the Knights Templar in Scotland. The Cross of the Grand Priory of the Scots.

The Knights Templar in the early days of their History in Scotland were associated with Brother William St Clair 3rd Earl of Orkney and 1st Earl of Caithness who built Rosslyn Chapel.

In the Rosslyn line and true tradition of our Brethren our next Brother William St Clair of Rosslyn who became the first Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Scotland and the great keeper of the true Secrets that has been handed down in the protection of our Knights Templar. Who Built his Church with many forms of one who can follow the signs incorporated in its interior from the Green Man, Musical Notes, the Fleur de lis  emblematic in the secrets, the apprentice Pillar the Templar Knights the inner sanctum sanctorum andnot far away Temple Land who some say holds the secret of the inquisitive mind.

alt  The Templars were no doubt the first Bankers of the modern World assisting the weary traveller by depositing his Monet in his Home land and gaining a credit to be collected in another country thus he did not have to carry money or valuables on his person. And when he came Home he could cash in his credit. But there were many who wanted to control the Templars one King Philip 1V of France who was deep in debt to the Knights Templar and ordered a plot against them of the way the international Templar system worked From the First Grand Master Hugues de Payens who along with our army of Templars searched the Holy Land for the truth of our one true Son of our Great Architect of the Universe Jesus the Fisher of Men and his Great followers the Apostles who were Twelve in number and his most trusted one who could be the Keeper of the true dynasty some may say Blood line, Holy Grail, Ark of the Covenant only the one true of heart one who has true faith  and one who’s charity knows no bounds one may ask if the Knights found the truth. In honour to Jacques de Molay our last Grand Master of the Templar’s 1244-18th March 1314.

Sir George Clark Memorial Lodge No 669 Visit 23rd January 2016

The RWM Bro Alistair Easson headed a visit to Sir George Clark Memorial Lodge No 669 accompanied by the following Brethren:-

Bro Robert Redpath PM.

Bro Robert McLean PM.

Bro Ian Ferguson PM.

Bro David Hull PM.

Bro W JR Boland PM.

Bro James Nicoll MM.

The Brethren met at Edinburgh Airport the Flight was Flybe BE 683 the flight was delayed by 1 Hour.

We arrived at George Best Airport at 11 40 am.

We boarded the Airport Bus outside the Airport the bus took us around Harland and Wolff the Historic Ship Building Yard in fact The Mighty White Star Line RMS Titanic Liner was Built there.

The Titanic was 882 feet 9 inches long and breath of 92 feet 6 inches High from base of keel to top of the Bridge was 104 feet. She measured 46,328 gross register tons.

The RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage struck an Iceberg and sank early on the 14th April 1912 there was estimated to be 2,344 passengers on board with the deaths of over 1,500 including 703 passengers.

The Airport Bus passed several other Land marks.

We arrived just around the corner from our Hotel the Europa the rooms were not ready until 3 pm.

So we went across to the George Bar which is wonderfully preserved. The Crown is both ageless and a priceless gem of Victoriana and is cherished by the people of Belfast.

The Crown Bar is now owned by the National Trust who in 1981 restored the Bar to its full Victorian splendour at a cost of £400,000.
In 2007 Mitchells & Butlers spent over half a million pounds to ensure the Crown Pub was saved in pristine condition for generations to come.

The RWM Bro Alistair thought it would be nice for us to have lunch at the Crown which we did the food was well presented and served by two of the staff who were very helpful.

Some of the Brethren had a pint of the best Irish dry stout Guinness brewed at Arthur Guinness since 1803 at St James's Gate Dublin who have annual sales of 1.5 billion Imperial or 1.8 billion US Pints.

The Crown has Drinking Snugs but the were all filled so we went upstairs, the food went down a treat.

The reason for our visit to Belfast was to attend the Installation of the Worshipful Master of Sir George Clark Memorial Lodge No 669 Master Elect Bro Bal Madrid at Freemasons Hall Arthur Square Belfast.

The Celtic Lodge E & L 291 arrived at St George Clark around 4.30 pm and were welcomed by the Bro Tyler and shown to the changing rooms.

The evening started at 5.00 pm the WM gave the visiting Celtic Lodge Brethren a very warm welcome into the Masonic Temple.
The usual Lodge business was carried out. The out going WM asked the W I Master to take over to perform his special duties to install the new WM.

The Worshipful Installing  Master called for his team to take up their respective places, he then called upon the Bro D of C to present the W M elect Bro Bal Madrid. The Installation of Bro Bal Madrid was so much different from the Scottish Rite Installation but it was most enjoyable and very well worked by the Installing Team.

The new Worshipful Master Bro Bal Madrid thanked his Installing team for the way the ceremony was carried out and a special mention to the installing Master who was a childhood friend and attended the same school. He also thanked the visitors who came from the four quarters of the world.

Bro Bal then invited the Brethren to the harmony board.

The Menu was as follows.

Vegetable Soup.

Sirloin Stake with Mixed Vegetables.

Pavlova or Fresh Fruit Salad. Cheese and biscuits followed by Tea and Coffee.

The Bro Chaplain said grace.

For these and all thy mercies given. We bless and praise thy name, O Lord May we receive them with thanksgiving. Ever trusting in Thy word To Thee, alone be honour, glory, Now and henceforth  for evermore. Amen.

The meal was served in the most Masonic tradition and was to the highest standard, which was well appreciated by all who attended and a special thanks was given to the caterers.

BUSINESS OF THE EVENING:
To discuss in considerable length and in detail the single topic on its agenda which was the setting up a trust or other body for our Heritable property.

Papers having been previously circulated which detailed our four main options most likely to be worth considering.

. A Trust
. A SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation)
. A Limited company
. An Association (This is our current status)

Forming a Trust or some other body to look after our Heritable property plus the lease on the café and other parts of our building. This would have to be designed to afford greater protection for members from liability.

Bro. Redpath advised that he had discussed the option with Grand Secretary who had said he would have a look at the options but as yet had not issued any response.

Bro. Hazel suggested that we discuss this situation with No 8 and find out if their setup would be suitable to our purpose and perhaps get some guidance.

Bro. Redpath advised that he would take this on board. Bro. Hazel agreed to get the contact details of someone we could speak with.

A vote was taken by those committee members present on the question of seeking external advice.

The vote was proposed by Bro. Gordon Yeoman PM and Seconded by Bro. David Hull PM.

A unanimous YES vote was cast.

To move matters forward it was agreed that Bro. Secretary could make contact with an appropriate Law firm to seek advice and guidance on which option could be best suited to our needs
Committee agreed that the Lodge would meet the cost of this legal advice.
Once these options had been explored Bro. Secretary was instructed to report his findings to committee and if necessary call a further committee meeting.

Next Committee Meeting date:
Committee meeting TBA.

A short extract from the Celtic Lodge History.

Brother William Henry Augustus Fitz Strathern had the honour of being secretary to a Masonic Lodge when he was very young the light having beamed on him in 1811 in the Lodge Kilwining of Kirkwall Island of Pomona whose charter No 45 bears the date 1st December 1740 Which makes him an old member of the architectural craft and he may add that he was made a Brother expressly for filling the situation of secretary since that remote period he has visited English and Irish Lodges in both of which Kingdoms he has been affiliated in the mystic art and has therefore had much experience in Masonry and science of calligraphy many of the brightest gems of the Celtic Lodge were affiliated Brethren among others Brother Murray excellent PM whose influential devotion to Masonry is the admiration of all present there is also Brother The Honourable Captain Joycelyn who deservedly occupies the highest positions in the lodge under whose command and wholesome instruction he need hardly say they all feel most happy in illustration on this important point affiliated members in some cases may be compared to say many small brooks contributing unity and strength to the magnificent current of the Brotherhood like the tributary streams that flow into a mystic river without hydraulic assistance it’s waters could never have assumed it’s mighty power nor reach the ocean in such force the volumes of records were given into the possession of Brother Fitz Strathern with instructions to draw up the minutes to issue circulars for monthly meetings and other attendances for which he should receive a remuneration corresponding to the salary voted to the secretary for the performance of his duties to the lodge Brother Fitz Strathern then took the oath De Fideli Adminis Trationi officii and did homage to the chair and afterwards to the brethren Thereafter Brother Konrad Jockel respectfully stated to the lodge that he had served his full time in the two degrees of Masonry and therefore now humbly requested the honour to be elevated to the third degree which request having been considered just and reasonable as a recompense due too zeal diligence and capacity Brother Jockel was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason and was then conducted to the east when the RWM commanded him to take his station among the brethren Brother Jockel then made his obeisance to the oriental chair and Worshipful Wardens and returned his grateful thanks to the lodge for the brilliant lanthorn of knowledge that had been revealed unto him in answer to the mystic question put by the RWM in the east to the JW whose duty it is to watch and report the glorious luminary sum announce that it was high meridian when the RWM gave orders that the brethren might for a short time enjoy rest and take refreshment with due dimensions and this was done accordingly not long after there arrived a Brother Celt from the far East Indies where he had been in service of Her Britannic Majesty as he had not been in the lodge for five years he was cordially welcomed and on his health being drunk with Masonic Honours he returned his grateful thanks and made the following brief speech most Worshipful and honourable brethren during my absence I have been in various parts of Asia and I am proud to say that in my travels in that vast region I have found Masonry to be of the greatest advantage to me and I bear evidence that Masonry is in the ascendant in foreign parts after having been so long away I feel uncommonly happy to be seated again in my maternal lodge and to be so kindly noticed on this occasion there is only one thing that lessens my joy and it is this when I cast my enquiring eye around me in search of my former associates I observe that very few of those excellent Masters of the craft who made me a Mason are present. Perhaps some of them like father Hiram and Brother Burns the poet have passed that bourn from whence no traveller returns. On the other hand it affords me great pleasure to observe in the lodge this evening many happy new faces of young brethren whose open intelligent countenances bespoke benevolent hearts one of the best attributes of the true disciples to the mystic tye. He therefore begged leave to offer his warmest congratulations for this increase of Celtic members and he sincerely hoped that the lodge would flourish in wisdom strength and beauty and he craved permission to dedicate a flowing bumper to all his brother Celts and success to the boundless elements of fraternity in Masonry was granted him to drink the toast amidst great demonstration of brethren. Brother Donaldson always animated with noble feelings towards music and masons favoured   the lodge with excellent sentiments and a few of his choice songs in his usual superior style to irresistibly applause. Brother McCormick and several other members followed with English Irish and Scottish carols which added to the hilarity and entertainment of the brethren. The lodge then resumed their work and terminated in a rational and social manner precisely at high twelve the RWM PM closed the lodge with the usual solemnities of Masonry. Please see our History of the Celtic Lodge.   wjrb.
